GAIL Explores Minority Stake in a US LNG Export Project

For India's fertiliser, petrochemical and city-gas industries, natural gas is not just fuel — it is feedstock. That is why where India's LNG comes from matters to chemical buyers.

GAIL (India) is in discussions with three to four US liquefaction and LNG export projects to acquire a minority stake in one of them. The move aims to diversify LNG supplies and strengthen long-term gas security after disruptions related to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

GAIL currently holds about 16.56 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of LNG contracts from suppliers including the United States, Qatar and Australia. Natural gas demand in India is driven by fertilizers, city gas distribution, power, refining and petrochemicals. GAIL did not comment on the report, and no stake size, volumes or project names have been disclosed.

What it means for buyers

An equity stake in a US project would give India more control over part of its LNG supply. For gas-based chemicals and fertilizer inputs, steadier long-term gas supply supports steadier pricing — but nothing changes until a deal is signed.
