GHCL Starts Liquid Bromine Production in Gujarat, Its First Step Beyond Soda Ash and Salt
GHCL, best known for soda ash and industrial salt, has started commercial production of liquid bromine. The plant began on 12 October 2026 at Village Kathivadar, Taluka Rajula, in Gujarat's Amreli district.
The plant can make 2,800 tonnes of bromine a year and is meant to serve both Indian customers and export markets.
Indian Chemical News reports that the bromine unit is built into the company's existing salt operations, which gives it its raw material on site, and that the project cost about ₹150 crore — part of a wider ₹300 crore diversification plan. It adds that GHCL is already evaluating downstream bromine derivatives.
Bromine goes into flame retardants, water-treatment biocides, agrochemicals, and the clear brine fluids used in oil and gas drilling.
What it means for buyers and suppliers
One more domestic source of bromine is good news for Indian makers of brominated intermediates, agrochemicals and biocides, who rely on a small number of producers. Buyers can ask GHCL for specifications, packing and lead times now; makers of bromine derivatives should note that GHCL may become a competitor further down the chain.
