GSFC Board Approves 600 TPD Phosphoric Acid and 1,800 TPD Sulphuric Acid Plants at Sikka

The board of Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals (GSFC) has approved a phosphoric acid plant of 600 tonnes per day and a sulphuric acid plant of 1,800 tonnes per day at its Sikka Unit in Jamnagar, Gujarat, along with the offsites and utilities needed to run them.

GSFC describes the project as long-term backward integration. With its own phosphoric and sulphuric acid, the company can make complex phosphatic fertilisers — particularly di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) — from internally produced feedstock, protecting its costs from swings in international prices and reducing its dependence on expensive imported raw materials.

The project cost and completion timeline were not disclosed in the report.

The same Sikka site is where GSFC is separately seeking a partner for a 5 lakh tonne-a-year green ammonia plant.

What it means for buyers and suppliers

New captive capacity at Sikka will mainly feed GSFC's own DAP lines, but it will also raise the company's demand for sulphur and phosphate rock — the inputs for these two plants. Sulphur suppliers and traders in Gujarat should watch the project's progress.
